What Is It Really Like to Live in St. Albert With a Family?

If you're thinking about moving to St. Albert, Alberta, there's a good chance you've already started looking at homes online.

Maybe you've been scrolling through Realtor.ca, checking neighbourhoods on Google Maps, looking at schools, watching YouTube videos, and trying to figure out where your family would actually fit.

And after a while, it can start to feel like a lot.

Here's the advice I give families before we ever start talking seriously about houses:

Don't choose the house first. Choose the life first.

Because finding the right place to live isn't only about bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage, or whether the kitchen has the island you've been dreaming about.

It's about what everyday life is going to look like once the moving boxes are gone.

Start With Your Family, Not the House

One of the biggest mistakes families can make when relocating is falling in love with a house before really thinking about the community around it.

A beautiful house can check every box on your wish list and still be in the wrong location for your family.

Before you start choosing neighbourhoods in St. Albert, think about the things that will affect your normal week.

How long do you want your commute to be?

Do you want your kids to be able to walk or bike to school?

Would you love having trails nearby for evening walks?

Do your weekends revolve around sports and kids' activities?

How close do you want to be to groceries, restaurants and everyday errands?

Would you rather live in an established neighbourhood with mature trees, or does a newer community fit you better?

Those questions aren't nearly as exciting as looking at gorgeous kitchens online.

But they're often much more important.

Think About Your Best Ordinary Tuesday

This is one of my favourite ways to help families think about where they want to live.

Ask yourself:

What does our best ordinary day look like?

Not vacation.

Not Christmas morning.

Not the perfect Saturday when nobody is late for anything. 😂

I'm talking about a completely normal Tuesday.

Maybe the kids come home from school and drop their backpacks by the front door.

Homework gets done at the kitchen island.

Someone has hockey, dance or soccer later that evening.

You need groceries.

The dog needs a walk.

And somewhere in there, you'd really like five peaceful minutes with a coffee.

That's real life.

And when you're choosing where to live, that life matters just as much as the house itself.

What Is Everyday Life Like in St. Albert?

One of the things I love about St. Albert is that it still has a smaller-community feel while having many of the things families need for everyday life.

There are parks, playgrounds and trails throughout the city.

The Red Willow Trail system gives families plenty of places to walk, bike and get outside.

In the summer, Saturday mornings can mean heading to the St. Albert Farmers' Market.

There are established neighbourhoods with mature trees as well as newer communities with newer homes and amenities nearby.

And Edmonton is right next door when you need something St. Albert doesn't have.

But that doesn't mean St. Albert is automatically the right choice for every family.

St. Albert Isn't Right for Everyone

I've lived in St. Albert since I was 13, raised my daughters here, and I genuinely love this community.

But I'm also a Realtor, and I'm never going to tell every family they should live here.

Sometimes Edmonton makes more sense.

Your commute might be easier.

You may get more of the home you want within your budget.

You might prefer having certain amenities closer to you.

Or you may simply find an Edmonton neighbourhood that feels more like your family.

That's okay.

The goal isn't to convince you to move to St. Albert.

The goal is to help you figure out where your family will be happiest living its everyday life.

My Own Family's Move to St. Albert

I understand this decision from a personal side too.

When I was 13, my parents moved our family to St. Albert from Ontario.

At that age, I thought we were moving to another house.

Looking back now, I understand that my parents were choosing much more than that.

They were looking for a community where they could raise their family.

St. Albert became that place for us.

Years later, I was able to raise my own daughters here too.

That's probably one of the reasons I'm so passionate about helping relocating families look beyond the listing photos.

A move can shape a family's life for years.

You deserve to feel confident about the decision you're making.

How Do You Choose the Right St. Albert Neighbourhood?

There isn't one "best neighbourhood" in St. Albert.

There's a best fit for your family.

A family with young children may prioritize parks, schools and quieter streets.

Another family might care more about commute times.

Someone else may want a newer home and newer amenities nearby.

Another family might fall in love with an established area because of the trees, lot sizes and character.

That's why I don't recommend choosing a neighbourhood from somebody else's "Top 5" list without understanding why those areas are being recommended.

Start with your family's priorities.

Then compare communities based on those priorities.

Life first. House second.

Should You Choose St. Albert or Edmonton?

This is often the bigger question.

And there's no universal winner.

St. Albert and Edmonton can both be wonderful places to raise a family, but everyday life can feel quite different depending on where you choose.
